For the past few days we’ve been working on a really EXCITING proposal which will dramatically improve the access the health in our region. The current Mucojo Health Centre, pictured below, is supposed to serve more than 30,000 people but as you can see has very limited facilities. The Mozambican Health Department has asked Nema to help upgrade these facilities to become a Rural Hospital with an outreach and motorised ambulance service! We are extremely keen to help the Government with this project and are now trying to secure funding.

Fingers crossed this dream will come true!

Out here, in rural northern Mozambique, poverty really does take your breath away. To equip communities to end poverty and needless suffering our work must start and end with education. However, teachers struggle with limited resources and there is very little to inspire and feed the minds of young students.

Up steps Chantal Dunbar, an author and environmental and social activist. Inspired by the work already underway, Chantal got in touch with Amy (our founder) wanting to create a series of story books and not just any books. These books will feature local children, stories and myths and, while keeping the books fun, will embed messages related to local issues such as malaria, HIV, conflicts with elephants etc. Once developed Nema will distribute them to 16 local schools (reaching 2,400 kids) as well as sell them in Guludo’s shop and beyond.

However, it’s not all signed and sealed, and this is where YOU come in - we don’t wan’t your charity but your involvement. We’ve put up a Kick-Starter page to raise the funds to develop the books. How it works is, you make a pledge, for example £40. This £40 will enable us to produce 4 books and by means of a “thank you” you will get a reward, in this case a signed copy of one of the books. The catch is that if we don’t raise the full amount we don’t get anything and you won’t need to pay a penny.

Introducing Jesse Pavlick, Nema’s Project Manager for the building of this, the first of several Community Health Posts. Jesse and his foreman, Abacar, are going great guns, all the masonry work is now done and the carpenters are working hard to put up the roof before the rains.

Three old Guludo team members; Tam, Charlie and Louise, plus 5 more friends (including 3 past Guludo guests) gallantly ran the run to the Beat half marathon yesterday to raise funds for our scholarship project. Guludo School’s chicken farm is now selling eggs to Guludo Beach Lodge Mozambique - as their income grows they will start buying food for the school feeding project (for 320 kids) from a neighbouring farmers co-op. :-)

We’ve just finished rehabilitating 12 water points in Nambo, Messano, Muituro, Runho, Nambija, Nacutuco, Manica, Naunde and Lumamua villages and clean, safe water is now flowing.

The Nema team are now getting ready for a 6-day water workshop taking place next week. The workshop will train local ‘water committees’ how to maintain and repair their wells when they fall into disrepair. Every village has a water committee, and we’ve invited 6 members from 8 villages to attend, as well as local government and village leaders.

The Ningaia school is almost finished. Now we need YOUR help! Most school children in this remote area of Mozambique attend classes by sitting on on old tree trunks or a mud floor. Using local carpenters and locally sourced wood, we’re aiming to build 100 school desks so that children can sit and learn comfortably.

Rabia Momade is a single mum from Rueia village who recently took part in our Hygiene & Sanitation project to learn how to protect her family from diarrhoeal disease - one of the biggest killers of young children. As part of the project, Nema also trains communities how to build simple household latrines. Following the training, the Nema team helped Rabia to dig her 2.5 metre deep latrine and then cover it with a cement lid. With her own household latrine, Rabia can now ‘spend a penny’ in saftey and privacy, and no longer needs to venture to the outskirts of the village as she once used to. As you can see from her photo, she’s pretty happy about that!

On Friday, Global Angels had their inaugural “Angel Awards” followed by “Angels in Concert”. Guludo and Nema’s co-founder, Amy, was there and collected a stunning Sworskovi award for Best Charity Partner on behalf of Nema - an incredible honour.

The concert was spectacular. Natasha Bedingfield (Molly’s daughter) brought along some of her friends; Leona Lewis, Joss Stone & John Forte (from the legendary Fugees) and together with her big brother (Daniel!) put on a show that showcased some of the best of British & American talent out there. We’re very proud to announce that Nema’s founder, Amy, collected 3 Conde Nast Traveler World Savers Awards on behalf of Guludo and Nema’s work in Singapore this month. The awards were in recognition of how Guludo’s tourism initiative facilitates sustainable development both through it’s operations and support of Nema. We were winners in the categories of Education, Poverty and Best Small Resort.
